"I don't believe in art. I believe in artists.”
-Marcel Duchamp
Role: Editor
Roy G Biv is a 60 minute art film created by my friend Alex Da Corte for the 2022 Whitney Biennial. With most of the film shot, my job was to pull the pieces together into a coherent structure.
The fun of it was that “coherent” in the art world runs on an entirely different logic than in the film and TV world. The story is loose, the film takes place in the Brancusi room of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (one of my favorite places) and slowly builds from black and white to color as the emotion of the piece becomes clear.
Alex plays Marcel Duchamp, as he morphs between alter egos, eventually becoming one of the statues. Using prosthetics and off speed camera work, I needed to find the internal rhythm of each scene, sometimes finding story in linear ways, but often in more associational and intuitive ways.
It was a welcome break from the extremely literal commercial world. I love working with Alex, I think he’s brilliant and a phenomenal collaborator. The piece debuted at the Whitney and has since travelled throughout the world.
