I’m looking for players for a new music project I’m putting together. I have a cluster of tracks finished that I want to bring into the live environment. Here is a sampling:
I want to put together an unusual ensemble: 6-7 people. Multiple percussionists, very groove oriented. I want to unpack these tightly crafted songs and create a dynamic live show, one that can live and breathe. I’m also hoping to move away from the indie-rock aesthetic I’m currently working with.
I want the live show to be about the players' chemistry and will involve being highly attuned to the audience, allowing for extended breakdowns, jams and buildups. My main aim is for us to have fun playing so I'm looking for people who are skillful and communicative. A sense of showmanship doesn’t hurt :) The songs aren’t challenging, but they involve a tight pocket.
In terms of goals and influences, I am trying to bring together the worlds of groove, emotion and narrative into well crafted songs. I love sonic texture as much as I love thundering percussion. A good pop hook or ripping guitar solo is amazing too. I listen to a lot of classic and contemporary songwriters like Paul Simon, Sufjan Stevens, Steely Dan, and Radiohead as well as more atmospheric artists like Little Dragon, Boards of Canada and late-era Talk Talk. I also love hip hop like Kendrick, Drake, and Outkast, and big out there pop thinkers like the Gorillaz, Beck & Prince. I like a lot of music, clearly, and am still trying to make sense of how to synthesize all of it.
At this point, I’m down to explore a lot of directions. And I’m interested in hearing from anyone who is interested in the project. You could be a West African drummer, in a drum line, or just great on the kit. You could rip guitar solos or be a big synth head. I don’t really care right now. Chemistry is all that matters.
I'm experienced enough to know that good players deserve compensation, so I will always do my best to make playing with me worth your time.
I will be setting up some shows in Philly & NYC this summer/fall. That's as far ahead as I've thought. I'm just interested in trying out some ideas.
If interested, hit me up. I’d love to talk to you.
