[This piece is taken from the documentary series that follows independent musicians in the recording studio called Shaking Through, that I directed from 2010 to 2014]
Role: Producer, Director, Cinematographer
Cassandra is a special woman, there is an aura around her--thoughtful, creative, and quick to feel wonder and appreciation. As a filmmaker, these traits made her a joy to work with. This was the first time she'd ever recorded a song with full orchestral arrangements, and my goal was to capture how she experienced it.
As cinematographer, I wanted the space to feel warm and comfortable, to match her personality. Because I was both shooting and directing, it meant she was very open with the camera which made for great moments.
I conducted an interview on film, but I found that it worked better as voice-over. The whole point was to be in her head as she experiences this for the first time, and there were enough live moments that voice over served as connective tissue.
I'm including a companion piece to the video about the technical aspects of the recording, which is really fun.
